Constituted in 1956, the Philharmonic "Mihail Jora" of Bacau, Romania, re-unites today a group of approximately 70 talented instrumentalists, the best of which constitutes the string orchestra "Tescana" (19 elements) including also the members of the well-known "Trio Syrinx" (Dorel Baicu - flute, Adrian Petrescu - oboe, Pavel Ionescu - bassoon), winner of six prizes in important international competitions.

The permanent repertoire of the Bacau Philharmonic relies upon symphonic, vocal-symphonic, chamber and choral music. It covers a broad range of styles and communistic periods of time , from Renaissance and Baroque to Romanticism and contemporary music.

Apart from the weekly concerts, the Philharmonic of Bacau organises different national and international festivals of high level like the annual festival Orpheus of Moldavia, The week of Contemporary music etc.

The repertoire of the Orchestra comprises pieces of symphonic, vocal-orchestral and chamber music, from a large variety of periods of creation and musical styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Contemporary. Apart the weekly concerts, the Philharmonic organizes various national festivals: "Orpheus of Moldavia", "Days of Contemporary Music", "The Workshop of the Young Composers".

For many years, the Orchestra has been invited to accompany semifinalists and finalists in important national and international competitions of Piano, Violin, Voice and Wind Instruments (Italy: "Citt? di Cant?", "Valsesia Music"; France: "Aix en Provence", "Floraisons Musicales"; USA: "Altamura Music Festival on the Greene", etc...).

Thanks to its remarkable artistic value, the Orchestra has been invited to record CD-s with various production houses in Europe: Electrecord (Romania), Edi Pan, Musica Insieme (Italy), Cadence Music Production (Germany), Belgium, etc. It has performed concerts in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Gibraltar, United States, Greece, Malta, Russia, obtaining remarkable successes and highly acclaimed critics. It has participated, in the prestigious festival "Altamura Music Festival on the Greene" and to the twentieth anniversary of the "Beethoven Festival", in the United States (2001).

Artistic Director and conductor of the Orchestra "Mihail Jora", Maestro Ovidiu Balan is one of the best Romanian conductors. He has studied in Bucharest with Maestro Iosif Conta, and perfected his studies in Holland, France, United States with: Jean Fournet, Marius Constant, Fernand Quattrocchi, Eugene Ormandi, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Georg Solti, Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel. He has directed important orchestras in the United States, Cuba, Italy, Germany, France, Holland, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Russia, Portugal, Poland, Hungary.

Maestro Ovidiu Balan has received the "ATM" Prize for the rendition of the 9? Beethoven Symphony, the prize of the critics of art for the rendition of Romanian Contemporary Music, the prize the Journalists Association of Bacau. For his artistic merits and career, he was decorated with: the "Cultural Merit"(1982), the "Master of the Arts" of the Republic of Moldavia (1994), the "Puncetto d'argento" of the Varallo - Valsesia in Italy (2000), the "Citizen of Honor" of the city of Bacau (2001).
